The Shire of Coolgardie is pleased to announce that its popular Meals on Wheels program will continue in Kambalda for the remainder of the 2021 calendar year, thanks to funding from Gold Fields.

The home delivery meal service has been supporting 60 Senior residents in the Shire since the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020. The program was quickly rolled out by the Shire, with support from the mining industry and other stakeholders, to ensure the most vulnerable members of the community received support when self-isolating at home.

Gold Fields has pledged further funding to continue the program in Kambalda. Since the Meals on Wheels program began, Gold Fields has provided over $90,000 in financial support.

Bevan Jones, General Manager at Gold Fields’ St Ives Gold Mine commented that, “At Gold Fields our priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, business partners and the communities in which we live and operate.

We are proud to partner with the Shire of Coolgardie to continue to provide this vital service and support the most vulnerable members of our community.”

Shire of Coolgardie CEO, James Trail said the value of the Meals on Wheels program extended beyond nutrition.

“It is clear that this project is making a huge difference in people’s lives and wellbeing. It has become more than just the delivering a nutritious meal - it incorporates a wellness check on these residents and Shire staff continue to work with other Community Services to ensure the wellness of these residents”.

“Our 2021 Community Survey results indicated that ‘Seniors Services’ are important to 96% of our local community. We’re thrilled that we can continue the Meals on Wheels program and would like to thank Gold Fields for their ongoing support.”

Local residents have also praised the program:

“I really look forward to it, its lovely meals, I can’t fault it.” - Ron McIntyre, Resident.

“The service is really good and the meals are a great size. The drop off times are very convenient. The food is plenty and very tasty.” - Judy Budrey, Resident.

The Meals on Wheels program has been running for 16 months with participating residents receiving two freshly made meals per week. Approximately 4,500 meals have been delivered in Kambalda to date.
