Kambalda Public Library – Book worms got treated to special guests this October and November
Our all so cosy storytime program has had to swap locations twice in the recent months due to some larger events calling for much needed space to sing and dance to our action songs and read one of our favourite book titles. With the CBCA Book Week being postponed from August to the end of October, we celebrated larger than ever and had the pleasure to invite Esperance based author Kim Maslin for the occasion. Kim grew up in Perth and has a teaching background and a passion for the digital world. Both combined, she created a book series to educate preschool and school aged children about cyber safety. On Friday, 23 October we ventured out to the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility function room that transformed into a possum and wild creature wonderland overnight and were lucky enough to also welcome primary students from Kambalda District High School and children from One Tree Childcare Services for the experience.
Kim read 'The little possum who looked up' and had all children in awe looking at the pages of her book projected onto the wall and answered everyone's curious questions about the characters but also had questions to the students about their own families habits with technology and digital devices.
Everyone enjoyed stretching their vocals to the popular nursery rhymes with Nancy the Peacock and thoroughly indulged in all craft activities on offer in the theme of curious minds and wild creatures ranging from making rockets ships, paper plate possums, creating their own curious creature using all sorts of different supplies and book mark making as well as colouring in for this year's CBCA theme.
The highlight after meeting our visiting author however were the animal and creature library hunt and lucky draw of the 3 winners of the signed copies of author Kim Maslin's title's 'The little possum who looked up', 'The Surfing Penguin' and 'The tweeting Galah'.
What a wild and wonderful day was had by all children. Thank you for celebrating Book week with us at the Kambalda Public Library.
NAIDOC week held from 8 - 15 November had us celebrating a Dreamtime storytime on 12 November with the wonderful local artist Rose Mitchell visiting One Tree Childcare Centre and reading 'The cunning crow' by Greg Dreise. All children's eyes were on the beautiful colourful pages of the book read by Rose. What a wonderful way of connecting with heritage and aboriginal culture. Rose took a lead on showing her talent in dot paint art and guided the children to create their own dot paint art crow. Some masterpieces were created that had us wondering where the little aartist's talent might take them one day.
We played and sung along to songs in language that Morning to 'I am Australian' by Yalu Band and
'Djinda, Djinda' in Noongar translated into twinkle twinkle little star with both educators and children without questioning the words, twinkling our twinkly fingers along to the tunes.
