Coolgardie Seniors Staying Connected

The Shire of Coolgardie has launched a new ‘Seniors Staying Connected’ program which will deliver a range of free activities to seniors within the community.

Once a week, the Shire of Coolgardie will host up to 20 senior residents and take them on an outing for up to 3-hours. Outings may include morning tea at a local café, trips to the movies or supermarket, lawn bowls, museum tours and healthy eating cooking classes.

The program will be delivered with the assistance of local service providers and businesses and is funded by the Shire of Coolgardie and the Department of Communities, through the Age Friendly Communities Social Connectivity Grants Program. Shire President, Malcolm Cullen said it was important to support seniors in the local community following COVID-19.

“The COVID-19 restrictions last year forced many of our older community members into self-isolation. With health conditions now greatly improved, we are encouraging our seniors to re-engage with community life and keep active,” said Cr Cullen.

“The Seniors Staying Connected program will reconnect seniors with each other, as well as the wider community, through activities run by the Shire.”

“The aim of the program is to combat the negative physical and emotional impacts of self-isolation at home.”

The Shire of Coolgardie’s Seniors Staying Connected program was one of 21 initiatives to receive a share of the $250,000 in State Government funding.

Seniors and Ageing Minister, Mick Murray said the projects supported will enable local governments and community organisations to work collaboratively and proactively ensuring the inclusion of seniors into our communities.

"Initiatives supported through the Age-friendly Communities Social Connectivity Grants Program will assist in re-establishing seniors with their pre-pandemic connections, as we work to build long-term resilience in our State,” said Hon Mick Murray MLA.

"The initiatives supported will help to reconnect our seniors to the community in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, with these important connections now more valuable and fundamental than ever.”
