Seniors Have A Go Day

What began in 1992 as a small event in South Perth as part of the Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc. has also become very popular in the Shire of Coolgardie and since grown to be one of the most popular annual events for Seniors in our community.

Every year the event is targeting the over 50’s demographic to get out of one’s comfort zone, try something new and have a laugh and most of all fun. Have a Go Day is designed to make seniors aware of the importance of exercise, socialisation and both physical and mental activity.

This year’s event was held at the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility with the sports hall decked out with exciting activities, games and challenges. Well over 35 seniors from Coolgardie and Kambalda were in attendance on a fun filled Morning promoting health and mental wellbeing.

With the support of local small businesses, we were able to change things up a little bit, offering a Thermomix guided cooking experience with local consultant Sherina, a set up of large outdoor games such as connect 4, noughts and crosses, giant Jenga and many others as well as a large inflatable dart board challenging our attendees to aim for the bulls eye.  Some of the other stations were table tennis, a photo booth, mental fitness activities challenging one’s memory by going through the alphabet naming animals and Australian locations all whilst catching a ball as well as lawn bowls and not to forget the famous seated hockey.

With the Community Centre offering digital weekly classes for people over 50’s this year’s event also hosted a technology station with attendees being able to test their general knowledge by competing in Kahoot quizzes against their competitors on smart tablets.

After a provided lunch catered by the Kambalda Hotel Nickel Bar and by far the highlight of the day was the smashing of the pinatas. What a fun experience to see that pinatas can not just be enjoyed by children at birthday parties but in fact be a much-enjoyed challenge for seniors as well.

It was wonderful to see everyone trying out something they have not done before, being able to take home home-made jams and lemon curd and leave with a smile on their face.

The feedback from participants and attendees each year is very positive stating that the Have a Go Day event is an event they look forward to attending each year. We can’t wait to plan some exciting activities for the Coolgardie held event for 2022.
