Telstra will begin upgrading the Coolgardie mobile base station from Tuesday 4 August 2026, with works expected to continue for approximately seven days.
Why is Telstra doing this work?
The upgrade is part of Telstra's ongoing investment in regional communications infrastructure and will introduce new 5G technology while increasing 4G network capacity in Coolgardie.
While temporary disruptions can be inconvenient, these improvements are designed to deliver a better mobile experience for residents, businesses and visitors into the future.
What will happen?
To safely complete the upgrade, Telstra will need to temporarily switch off the mobile tower at various times during the works.
This means Telstra mobile services may be unavailable for periods of up to 10 hours on some days.
Importantly, this does not mean services will be unavailable for the entire seven-day period.
What services are affected?
The disruption is expected to affect Telstra mobile services only.
The following services are not expected to be affected:
✅ NBN internet services
✅ Satellite internet services
✅ Landline telephone services
✅ Mobile services from other providers
Can I still call Triple Zero?
Telstra advises that if its mobile network is temporarily unavailable, calls to Triple Zero (000) from a Telstra mobile may automatically connect through another available mobile network where coverage exists.
However, residents are encouraged to prepare ahead of time and not rely solely on mobile services during the outage period.
How can I stay connected?
One of the easiest ways to prepare is to enable Wi-Fi Calling on your mobile phone.
Wi-Fi Calling allows many smartphones to make and receive calls and send text messages using a Wi-Fi connection when mobile coverage is unavailable.
Turn on Wi-Fi Calling in three simple steps:
Step 1: Connect to a Wi-Fi network.
Step 2: Open your phone's Settings and search for "Wi-Fi Calling".
Step 3: Turn Wi-Fi Calling on.

Free Community Wi-Fi Available
To help residents stay connected during the upgrade works, the Shire of Coolgardie and Integrated ICT will provide a free temporary community Wi-Fi service at the Coolgardie Recreation Centre.
WiFi name: Shire of Coolgardie Public Wi-Fi
How to connect:
- Select Wi-Fi
- The Shire logo will pop up
- Click connect
The service will be available throughout the upgrade period, providing residents, visitors and businesses with an alternative way to access the internet while Telstra's mobile network is being upgraded.
Information for Businesses
Local businesses are encouraged to check how their EFTPOS terminals connect to the internet.
If your EFTPOS facility currently relies on the Telstra mobile network, now is a good time to speak with your provider about connecting through your NBN or Wi-Fi service as a backup.

Telstra customers will receive SMS notifications regarding the planned works.
