Key Messages

Resolution of outdated debts – Previous reports of owing $1.2 million to creditors are outdated.

Financial Recovery Plan well underway.

Ongoing commitment to improvement and transparency.

The Shire of Coolgardie notes recent media coverage describing the Council as “cash strapped” and reporting on the Shire’s debts. The Shire wishes to provide clarification and context regarding its financial position.

The Shire has made significant progress in strengthening its financial status, with measures outlined in the Shire’s Financial Recovery Plan, available here. This plan addresses ongoing financial obligations and sets a clear path toward sustainable management of Council finances.

Reports that the Shire owes $1.2 million to creditors are outdated. These payments were made as of 8 October 2025. Currently, $330,000 remains as outstanding creditors over 90 days, which reflects a long-standing dispute with one creditor. This matter is under review, with the creditor providing additional information to Council, and will remain unresolved until the review is complete.

The Shire regularly manages creditor payments, running payments fortnightly to ensure all outstanding accounts are paid in full unless disputed. The amount owed to creditors naturally fluctuates as part of regular operations.

Reports citing a total debt of $25.4 million, including $16 million attributed to Bluebush Village, relate to long-standing financial commitments and are not new. These obligations are fully acknowledged and addressed in the Shire’s Financial Recovery Plan.

New Shire President, Cr Paul Wilcox states, “I am fully aware of the Shire’s financial status, and I am eager to work with our administration and fellow Council members to continue the improvements made to date.”

The Shire of Coolgardie remains committed to responsible financial management and transparency, ensuring the community is informed of both challenges and progress.
