Shire President receives Life Membership Award

More than 14 years’ service across not only local government but regional groups has seen Shire of Coolgardie President Malcolm Cullen receive Life Membership to the WA Local Government Association at WALGA’s Honours Awards for 2022.

The Honours Program recognises and celebrates the outstanding achievements and lasting contributions made by Elected Members and employees to their respective Councils, the Local Government sector and the wider community.

President Cullen was elected to the Shire of Coolgardie in 2008 as a council member and was quickly elected President in the following year and maintained that presidency uninterrupted for 13 years.

A third generation Coolgardie resident, Malcolm and his family have played a significant role in shaping the history of the Coolgardie region. A small business owner in Coolgardie, Malcolm was so committed to his community service that he closed his business to concentrate on his Local Government role.

Malcolm divides his time between many roles and groups. Apart from his Shire Presidency he is also the current chairperson of the Goldfields Voluntary Regional Organisation of Councils (GVROC), chairperson of the Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC), and current chairperson of the Goldfields-Esperance Regional Road Group, committee member of The Coolgardie Day Committee and August 2022 marked 50 years of commitment to the Coolgardie Volunteer Fire Service.

Malcolm said after receiving the award, “ I am extremely grateful to receive the Life Membership Award. It has been my honour to serve the Shire of Coolgardie and it’s community for the last 14 years. Having been born and raised in Coolgardie and raising my own family there, everything I put into the community I believe I have got back 10-fold.”

Malcolm received the award on Saturday 1st of October at the 2022 WA Local Government Convention. Also in attendance was his wife Noeline, along with Shire of Coolgardie CEO, James Trail and Deputy CEO, Robert Hicks.
