Pet owners across Kambalda took advantage of a range of free services during the Shire of Coolgardie's inaugural Community Animal Action Day, helping improve animal welfare while supporting local families with the rising cost of living.
Held at the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility, the event offered free microchipping for cats and dogs, complimentary flea, worm and parasite treatments, pet food assistance for families in need, animal health advice and a community sausage sizzle. The initiative was designed to promote responsible pet ownership, improve compliance with animal registration requirements, and strengthen connections between the community and the Shire's Ranger Service.
The event achieved its objectives, with a steady flow of pet owners attending from the 10am start. Throughout the day, seven cats and six dogs were microchipped, while approximately 35 animals received worming and parasite treatments or treatment packs for owners to take home.
For local Kambalda resident Taneeka, the event provided a convenient opportunity to have five-year-old dog Ellie microchipped and registered without needing to travel outside the community.
"Having these services available in Kambalda made it so much easier. It was far more convenient than travelling to Kalgoorlie, and I was able to get Ellie microchipped and registered at the same time. I would definitely use the service again if it were offered in the future," Taneeka said.

Senior Shire Ranger, Kristy Marshall said the positive response from the community highlighted the value of bringing essential pet services directly to local residents.
"It was a successful day with a great turnout and a very positive response from the community.
The Shire wanted to make it easier for pet owners to access important services while helping to keep animals safe and identifiable.
With annual animal registrations due by 31 October, it was also a timely opportunity for residents to ensure their pets are both microchipped and registered.
Microchipping and registering your pets are one of the simplest ways to protect them if they become lost.
Thank you to everyone who attended and to the volunteers and sponsors who helped make the day possible. I am proud of what we achieved together.”
The Community Animal Action Day is an example of the Shire of Coolgardie putting its Council Plan into action by delivering diverse community events that activate local facilities and encourage community participation.
As the first event of its kind held in Kambalda, the initiative brought residents to the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility to access services that would otherwise require travel, creating both a practical benefit for pet owners and increased visitation to a key community hub.
Following the success of the Kambalda event, the Shire will host a second Community Animal Action Day at the Coolgardie Community Recreation Centre on 24 October. Read more about the event here.
Shire residents will once again be able to access a range of free pet services, with RSPCA Inspectors attending to provide additional animal welfare information, advice and support.
The Shire acknowledges the generous support of event sponsors and partners, including Kalgoorlie Feed Barn, RSPCA, Woolworths Kambalda, Kalgoorlie Animal Hospital and Bunnings Kalgoorlie, whose contributions helped make the day possible.
