The Shire of Coolgardie welcomed the Minister for Local Government, Hon. Hannah Beazley MLA, and Member for Kalgoorlie, Ali Kent MLA, to the Coolgardie Council Chambers on Monday, 13 October.

The meeting provided the Minister an opportunity to deliver her decision following the Shire’s response to the Show Cause Notice issued in late August. The discussion was direct and clearly outlined the expectations placed on Council moving forward.

The Minister acknowledged the Shire’s financial progress to date and has provided the Shire with 12 months to continue its progress in improving its financial status. During this time, the Shire will be required to provide regular quarterly financial updates.

The Shire of Coolgardie expressed appreciation for the opportunity to meet face-to-face with the Minister and to have a transparent conversation about the future of the Shire of Coolgardie.

Shire CEO, Aaron Cook said the next 12 months will focus on maintaining the positive direction achieved to date, supported by quarterly reporting and ongoing training for both new and existing Elected Members.

“This is the best outcome we could have hoped for and is in alignment with our Position Paper requesting 12 months to implement the Shire’s Financial Recovery Plan. With the financial recovery plan in action and positive financial markers met, this next period gives our Council, community, and administration the chance to continue our progress toward financial and administrative sustainability,” Mr Cook said.

Council also took the opportunity to acknowledge and apologise to the community for the challenges faced over recent months.

“Council is pleased with the Minister’s decision and is fully committed to meeting the requirements set out,” said Shire President, Malcolm Cullen.

We again acknowledge and apologise to our community for the situation the Shire is currently in, and we welcome the opportunity to rebuild and restore confidence. With a newly elected Council, we are determined to create lasting, positive change through openness and transparency.

The Shire of Coolgardie remains committed to working closely with the Minister, the Department, and its community to restore confidence and deliver strong, sustainable local governance.

Following the formal discussions, Minister Beazley and Ms Kent met with community members for a Question-and-Answer session at the Coolgardie RSL.

Community members are encouraged to learn more about the Shire’s financial recovery to date and into the future:
