The Shire of Coolgardie wishes to advise the community that, effective Monday, 2 June 2025, the Kambalda Waste Transfer Station will adopt new operating hours.
The facility will now be open four days a week:
- Thursday and Friday from 9:30am to 1:30pm
- Saturday and Sunday from 8:30am to 1:30pm
These changes form part of a broader strategy to improve operational efficiency and financial sustainability, and to ensure the continued delivery of waste services in Kambalda in the longer-term. By refining staffing requirements and reducing facility hours to better match community usage, the Shire is forecasting a significant improvement in cost management — with total annual operating expenses expected to decrease from over $518,000 to approximately $266,000.
Acting CEO, Aaron Cook said that although this adjustment may take some getting used to, the revised hours have been carefully planned around community needs.
“We understand any change can be challenging, and we’ve considered how to minimise impact to community as much as possible. Saturday and Sunday remain the busiest days at the Kambalda Waste Transfer Station, which is why these days will retain the longest operating hours,” Mr Cook said.
“We need to ensure we maintain accessible services for residents, while also responding responsibly to current budgetary pressures.”
Importantly, residents will still be able to dispose of the following waste types at the Kambalda Waste Transfer Station for free:
- General waste
- Food waste
- Plastics
- Household furniture
- E-waste
- Green waste
- Cardboard
- Mattresses
- Residential scrap metal
- White goods
Commercial drop-offs outside normal hours can be arranged by appointment and at a cost, providing flexibility for business users.
Shire staff affected by the changes will be redeployed to other duties, ensuring no loss of employment and continued community service.
The Shire will continue to update residents through social media, its website, and local information centres to ensure a smooth transition.

Why are the hours being reduced?

I work during open hours and can't make it
We recognize that everyone’s schedule is different. That’s why we’ve kept weekend access available on both Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM. If you’re unable to attend during those times, consider asking a friend, neighbour, or family member to assist with your waste disposal.
