The Shire of Coolgardie is encouraging residents to take action for their pets' health and wellbeing, with two free Community Pet Action Days planned for Kambalda and Coolgardie this October.
Designed to support responsible pet ownership and help reduce the number of stray and unidentified animals in our communities, the events will provide a range of free services and information for local dog and cat owners.
The first event will be held at the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility on Saturday 10 October, followed by a second event at the Coolgardie Community Recreation Centre on Saturday 24 October. Both events will run from 10am to 1pm.
Shire of Coolgardie residents will be able to access free microchipping and worming treatments for cats and dogs, helping owners save money while ensuring their pets can be more easily identified and reunited with their families should they become lost. Free pet food will also be available for families experiencing hardship, alongside animal welfare education and advice.
The initiative comes at a time when many households are facing ongoing cost of living pressures, making it more important than ever to provide practical support that helps families care for their pets.
Shire of Coolgardie Ranger Kristy Marshall said the event was about making it easier for residents to take positive action for their animals.
"Pets are an important part of many families and we know that caring for them can come with additional costs.
These events are an opportunity for residents to access important services free of charge, while also learning more about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare."
Microchipping is one of the most effective ways of ensuring lost pets can be reunited with their owners, and we encourage anyone who hasn't yet had their pet microchipped to take advantage of this opportunity."
Community members attending can also enjoy a free sausage sizzle and connect with local organisations supporting animal welfare in the region.
Sponsorships and partner contributions are currently being finalised, with further announcements expected in the lead up to the events. The Shire is also working to confirm attendance by the RSPCA at the Coolgardie event.
Pet owners are reminded that dogs must remain on leads at all times, while cats must be transported in secure carriers.
Owners of reactive dogs are asked to notify staff upon arrival, and unvaccinated or newly vaccinated puppies should be carried for their safety.
