February has been a lively month across the Shire, with families and young people taking part in a variety of well‑supported community activities. The month began with a burst of energy on 1 February when the Freestyle Now team visited Coolgardie to deliver scooter, skate and BMX coaching. Travelling from Perth, the instructors shared practical guidance for riders of all levels, helping beginners safely enter the bowl and giving more confident kids new techniques to try. Their visit has clearly inspired local riders, with the skate park now buzzing before and after school as kids practise what they learned. The session was proudly sponsored by Coolgardie Day, with Shire staff volunteering their time to set up the event and cook the sausage sizzle.
The popular Cooking with Kellie program also returned, giving kids the chance to get creative in the kitchen. This month’s session focused on mini pizzas and garlic bread, and participants wasted no time loading up their creations with plenty of toppings. The result was a fun, messy and very tasty afternoon that ended with full stomachs and happy faces.
Adding to the month’s activities, the Valentine’s Day Pingo night once again drew a strong crowd. Hosted by Sheree and Tenielle, the evening was filled with laughs, friendly competition and a great range of prizes, including plants, homewares, candles and even bird baths. Pingo continues to be a favourite social outing for many residents, especially those who don’t get out often, and its popularity shows no signs of slowing.
Meanwhile, Soccer with a Copper has continued to grow in momentum, thanks to local police officers who volunteer their time each week. One session included a visit from CAPS students, helping introduce older kids to local officers in a relaxed and positive setting. These interactions play an important role in building trust and confidence, ensuring young people feel comfortable reaching out to police if they ever need support. The program runs every Thursday after school throughout Term 1 and remains a highlight for many families.
Across all events, the community spirit has been strong, and February has shown once again how valued these activities are to families throughout the Shire.
