The Shire of Coolgardie Council officially adopted its 2025–26 Annual Budget at its Ordinary Council Meeting held on 29 July 2025. This budget marks a step forward in the Shire’s financial recovery following months of collaboration between Councillors, staff, contractors and the Acting Chief Executive Officer.
The development of the Budget involved a review of services and spending, with an operating surplus of $3.68 million and a focus on essential infrastructure and services.
One of the highlights of the budget is the $9 million capital works program, with more than $7 million allocated specifically to upgrading road infrastructure. These projects will not only address a backlog of works but also enhance road safety across the Shire.
The Shire’s financial position is steadily improving with forecasts for 30 June 2026 showing unrestricted cash reserves at $1.24 million—a notable turnaround from the negative balance of $934,000 just two years prior.
While the 2024–25 financial year was forecast to close with a deficit of $6.6 million, the Shire has reduced this figure to $1.25 million through a combination of new borrowings and the recognition of back rates. While some capital projects have been deferred, most were tied to funding already received, meaning their postponement had minimal impact on this improvement.
Council has also reviewed all fees and charges to ensure services remain sustainable. This includes waste collection, which will be charged at $450 per service (excluding GST) to recover the true cost of delivering waste management in the Shire. Revenue from these services will closely match the operational costs of waste collection and tip site management.
