Slippery in the Kambalda West Memorial Garden.
A big congratulations to Stephen (Slippery) Basley, our Leading Hand on 5 years' service with the Shire of Coolgardie.
Slippery, as he is affectionately called is a valued member of the team. We asked Slippery a few questions about his time with the Shire.
What was you first position at the SoC ?
Parks and Gardens Labourer in Kambalda East.
What do you enjoy most about working at the SoC?
I love being in the outdoors and working in the gardens. I have always been a plant operator as well so this job gives me the chance to keep doing that type of work. I like travelling to Coolgardie and working with our team there. Over the years, I have enjoyed the challenges that have come my way as they've always offered a chance to learn.
What do you hope to achieve while working at the SoC?
I'd like to see the Shire get back on its feet.
What are some of the highlights of your career?
A memorable time for me was preparing the Kambalda East Gardens for the ANZAC services in 2022. It was a big job but it was a great experience imparting knowledge to my co-worker Tim.
I have a passion for landscaping and can be quite particular about garden layouts. On this particular occasion, I had a plan for the placement of yuccas in the garden and one of my team mates, Cyril Poke, deliberately planted a yucca off centre! That was a funny moment and I ended up not repositioning the yucca. I was glad I didn't as 12 months later my good work friend would pass away so it became a reminder of him and the laughs we shared.
Another highlight was working with our previous Leading Hand, Peter Miller. He was a great mentor and he taught me a lot which set me up well for my move into the Leading Hand position.
What tips can you give anyone thinking about working in Outdoor Services?
Keep an open mind, there's so much to learn so take it all in. IF you think you can make something or have an idea, speak up.
What initiatives or projects are you most proud of, and how have they positively impacted the residents and businesses within the Shire?
Definitely the work we did at Kambalda East gardens in prep for ANZAC, we did a great job and it was a pleasure to work with my team.
