Ben Prior Park Revitalisation Project Underway

Ben Prior Park is considered the oldest open-air mining museum in Western Australia. Thanks to the support of Evolution Mining, this cherished display of Goldfields history will soon be receiving a makeover.

The Shire of Coolgardie, Evolution Mining, Coolgardie’s Men Shed, and local contractors recently met at the site to kick off the rejuvenation of the Park.

Ben Prior came to Coolgardie with his wife and five children in 1932 and owned a garage next to the park. The park today showcases historical mining equipment and farming tools found by Ben Prior whilst prospecting, as well as a shed with vintage cars.

“We have been fortunate enough to receive $178,000 in funding from Evolution Mining to revitalise this historic park,” said Shire President, Malcolm Cullen.

“The Shire of Coolgardie has also committed in-kind and financial support for the project.”

“Being outdoors, the weather has certainly taken its toll on the artifacts over the years. This project will enable us to restore and protect the exhibits so they can be enjoyed for generations to come.”

Once complete, the park will include gazebos, a nature playground, landscaping, newly restored equipment and a replica of Jack Cairns prospector camp.

Construction on Ben Prior Park is scheduled to commence in September 2020.
