Essential runway maintenance was completed at Kambalda airport from 20th to 22nd June with Shire staff and Versatile Contracting laying 800 tonnes of gravel to re-sheet the centre of the runway.
The upgrade was necessary to improve safety and reduce post-rainfall downtime, after the worn surface made it difficult to manage and increased the risk of loose stones causing damage to aircraft.
The works focused on replacing the degraded surface, which had lost its ability to bind with finer materials—creating potential hazards for planes during take-off and landing. With the fresh layer of gravel now in place, the runway boasts a smoother and more durable finish.
Shire officials and stakeholders have welcomed the upgrade, which not only boosts safety but also improves reliability in wet weather, supporting ongoing airport operations with fewer disruptions.
