Please attribute the below information to Shire President, Cr Malcolm Cullen
The Shire of Coolgardie wishes to advise stakeholders that it has received formal notification from the Director General of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSCI), Lanie Chopping, that the Shire of Coolgardie’s application for an increased differential rate for the mining sector has been refused.
While this outcome is disappointing, the Shire recognises that the proposed rate increase was significant, and while it may have looked ambitious in its scope, the motivation was always to restore and future-proof infrastructure for the benefit of the mining sector. The intention was to address long-standing infrastructure challenges—particularly the condition of roads heavily utilised by the mining sector—and bring them up to a standard that supports both economic activity and community wellbeing.
In light of this decision, the Shire will now implement its alternative budget strategy. This will unfortunately result in a substantial reduction in funding available for key projects, meaning several important upgrades and initiatives—some of those relating to road improvements—will need to be deferred to future years.
Despite this setback, the Shire remains committed to working collaboratively with the DLGSCI and the Minister to explore pathways towards an equitable and sustainable outcome for all ratepayers.
Further updates on this matter will be provided as information comes to hand.
