Leading Hand – Coolgardie

Lead from the front. Keep works moving. Help deliver safe, reliable infrastructure for Coolgardie.

The Shire of Coolgardie is seeking an experienced and hands-on Leading Hand to join the Infrastructure and Assets team and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Coolgardie works crew.

This is a practical field leadership role focused on delivering road, drainage, streetscape and public infrastructure works safely and efficiently while providing clear daily direction to employees and coordinating plant, materials and worksite requirements.

We are looking for someone who leads by example — a capable civil works operator who can organise people and tasks, maintain high safety and quality standards, solve practical problems in the field and remain actively involved in the work.

Why this role?

This is an opportunity to take a key operational leadership role in a small regional team and have a direct impact on the roads, drainage and public infrastructure used by the Coolgardie community.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead daily pre-starts and communicate work priorities, hazards, controls and expected standards.
  • Allocate daily tasks and plant according to employee competency, licences and the approved works program.
  • Participate in and lead road maintenance and construction, patching, gravel works, drainage, culverts, shoulders, signage and related civil activities.
  • Operate plant and equipment within competency and licence requirements.
  • Monitor workmanship and completed works against instructions, levels and specifications.
  • Coordinate materials, tools and equipment and ensure plant pre-starts and fault reporting are completed.
  • Implement approved traffic management and worksite controls within accreditation and authority.
  • Provide practical on-the-job guidance and raise performance, conduct or resource issues with the responsible supervisor or manager.
  • Maintain accurate timesheets, job records, plant records and other operational documentation.

Work and Live in the Goldfields

Working with the Shire of Coolgardie offers the opportunity to lead practical works in a regional environment where the quality and reliability of the crew’s work is visible throughout the community.

The position is permanent and full-time, based primarily in Coolgardie, and will work closely with the Works Supervisor or responsible manager, outdoor employees, contractors and other Infrastructure and Assets staff.

What We Can Offer You

Remuneration: $75,000 – $84,000, PLUS 12% superannuation and 17.5% annual leave loading. Any applicable regional allowances or employment benefits will be confirmed in the offer of employment.

Shire benefits may include:

  • Four weeks’ annual leave.
  • Flexible working hours that may be negotiated.
  • Professional development and training opportunities.
  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Free skin cancer screening and flu vaccinations.
  • Free access to the swimming pool and gym.
  • Free school holiday care for school-aged children at both the Coolgardie and Kambalda Recreation Centres.

Who We're Looking For

We want to hear from experienced civil works people who are ready to lead a small crew while remaining hands-on in day-to-day operations.

You will bring demonstrated experience in road, drainage, civil construction or maintenance activities; the ability to organise daily work and guide employees; sound WHS awareness; practical plant and equipment experience; and the judgement to respond appropriately to changing worksite conditions.

Previous local government or regional civil works experience, a Certificate III in Civil Construction or Road Construction and Maintenance, traffic management accreditation and First Aid will be highly regarded. A current WA HR Class Driver’s Licence and Construction Induction (White Card) are essential.
