Governance Officer
Strengthen good governance. Support transparent decisions. Make a visible contribution in the Goldfields.
The Shire of Coolgardie is seeking an experienced and capable Governance Officer to join the Office of the Chief Executive Officer, reporting directly to the CEO.
This is a dedicated governance role focused on helping the Shire meet its statutory, regulatory and corporate governance obligations and supporting high-quality, transparent and accountable decision-making across the organisation.
We are looking for someone with strong governance and compliance capability, excellent attention to detail and sound judgement — someone who can interpret legislation, coordinate critical statutory processes, provide clear advice and maintain the governance systems and records that support Council and the organisation.
Why this role?
This is an opportunity to work at the centre of local government governance and directly support the CEO, Elected Members and the broader organisation.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Coordinate Council and Committee governance processes, including agendas, minutes and action tracking.
- Maintain statutory registers, delegations, authorisations and the Shire’s corporate compliance calendar.
- Coordinate the Compliance Audit Return and other statutory governance reporting requirements.
- Monitor legislative change and provide practical governance and compliance advice across the organisation.
- Coordinate the review and administration of Council policies, procedures and local laws.
- Support Freedom of Information, Ombudsman, legal liaison and information-access processes.
- Support local government election requirements and governance-related annual reporting.
- Contribute to corporate risk, audit, internal control and governance improvement activities.
- Support compliant procurement and tender governance processes and maintain appropriate records.
Importantly, this position is focused on governance. It does not carry responsibility for the Shire’s human resources, industrial relations or workplace functions.
Work and Live in the Goldfields
Working with the Shire of Coolgardie offers the opportunity to make a visible contribution in a regional organisation where good governance directly supports Council, employees and the communities of Coolgardie and Kambalda.
The position is permanent and full-time and will work closely with the CEO, Elected Members, senior leaders and employees across the Shire.
What We Can Offer You
Salary Package: Remuneration of $84,490– $90,819 per annum, commensurate with skills, experience and the responsibilities and seniority of the role, PLUS 12% superannuation and 17.5% annual leave loading. Remuneration is inclusive of any applicable regional allowances.
Shire benefits may include:
- Four weeks’ annual leave.
- Flexible working hours that may be negotiated.
- Professional development and training opportunities.
- Employee Assistance Program.
- Free skin cancer screening and flu vaccinations.
- Free access to the swimming pool and gym.
- Free school holiday care for school-aged children at both the Coolgardie and Kambalda Recreation Centres.
Who We're Looking For
We want to hear from governance professionals who can combine technical knowledge with sound judgement, discretion and a practical approach to supporting decision-makers.
You will bring demonstrated governance or compliance experience, preferably within Western Australian local government; knowledge of the Local Government Act 1995 and relevant regulations; the ability to interpret legislation and policy; strong written communication and report-writing skills; and the organisation and attention to detail required to manage competing statutory deadlines.
Experience with Council meeting processes, statutory registers, delegations, policy administration, FOI, local laws, elections, risk, audit or legal liaison will be highly regarded.
