Join Our Team!
Finance/Payroll Officer
Keep the numbers accurate. Support our people. Build your career in the Goldfields.
The Shire of Coolgardie is seeking an organised and detail-focused Finance/Payroll Officer to join our Corporate Services team.
Payroll will be the core responsibility of this practical, hands-on role, with the position also providing broad operational support and flexibility across the Finance Team. In addition to fortnightly payroll preparation and processing, the role will support reconciliations, accounts receivable and payable leave coverage, Goldfields Records Storage financial transactions, purchase order reporting, audit and month-end activities, and other general finance requirements as needed.
We are looking for someone who is reliable, methodical and comfortable working to recurring deadlines - someone who understands the importance of accuracy, confidentiality, customer service and sound financial controls.
Why this role?
This role is an important part of the Shire’s day-to-day financial operations. Unlike Finance Officer positions that own a specific finance function, this position has Payroll as its core responsibility while providing flexible support across a range of finance activities to strengthen overall team capacity.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Prepare/support the Shire’s fortnightly payroll processing and associated checks accurately and within required timeframes, in accordance with approved payroll procedures.
- Complete finance administration, reconciliations in accordance with approved finance procedures.
- Produce purchase order reports, follow up outstanding purchase order issues and reconcile Shire credit cards.
- Maintain accurate finance records, including the Portable Asset Register and Goldfields Records Storage accounts in MYOB.
- Support month-end reconciliations, financial reporting and audit requirements with accurate records and timely follow-up.
- Provide flexible operational support across the Finance Team, including accounts receivable and payable leave coverage and general ad hoc finance and administrative support as required.
- Respond professionally to finance, payroll, supplier and customer queries, maintain confidentiality and escalate discrepancies or matters outside approved procedures.
If you enjoy taking ownership of recurring payroll responsibilities while also working across a broad range of practical finance activities, this role offers variety and the opportunity to make a valued contribution to the Finance Team and the wider Shire.
Work and Live in the Goldfields
Working with the Shire of Coolgardie offers something different from a traditional metropolitan finance role.
You will become part of a regional organisation where your contribution is visible and where you can build broad local government finance experience through a role that combines core payroll responsibility with practical support across day-to-day finance operations.
The position is permanent and full-time, based in Kambalda and classified at Level 5/6 under the Local Government Industry Award 2020. Local travel may be required for authorised Shire business.
Whether you already call the Goldfields home or are considering a regional career move, we would welcome the opportunity to hear from you.
What We Can Offer You
Salary Package: Remuneration of $77,292.89 - $83,171.59 per annum, aligned to the Level 5/6 classification and commensurate with skills and experience, PLUS 12% superannuation and 17.5% annual leave loading. Remuneration is inclusive of any applicable regional allowances.
You will also receive:
- Four weeks' annual leave.
- Flexible working hours and location that may be negotiated.
- Professional development and training opportunities.
- Employee Assistance Program.
- Free skin cancer screening and flu vaccinations.
- Free access to the swimming pool and gym.
- Free school holiday care for school-aged children at both the Coolgardie and Kambalda Recreation Centres.
Who We're Looking For
We want to hear from people with practical payroll and finance administration experience who can confidently manage recurring payroll responsibilities while remaining flexible and responsive to the broader operational needs of the Finance Team.
You will have demonstrated experience processing payroll and handling sensitive information confidentially, together with practical finance administration experience including creditors/debtors, reconciliations and month-end support. Sound knowledge of payroll functions, accounts payable/receivable, reconciliations, GST and general finance administration is essential.
You will bring strong numeracy, attention to detail, problem-solving, customer service and communication skills, together with sound computer skills including Microsoft Office and accurate data entry. Knowledge of computerised finance/payroll systems, including SynergySoft, and local government financial processes will be highly regarded.
A tertiary qualification or relevant certificate in finance, accounting or a similar field is desirable, as is relevant payroll, bookkeeping or finance systems training. Demonstrated equivalent practical experience is also valued.
