Work / Life Balance

The Shire acknowledges the importance for employees to balance work and other responsibilities and offers a range of measures to assist employees in achieving this. These include job sharing and permanent part-time work opportunities.

In some circumstances and depending on the nature of the work, employees can submit a request to work from home for a short period. (This is subject to work operation requirements.)

Rostered Day Off (RDO)

Out-door employees have an attractive 9-day working fortnight. For some other departments, an attractive 19 day working month is in place allowing employees to take a roster one day per month. By arrangement with your supervisor, up to 3 days may be accrued and taken at one time. Employees may use this benefit to take long weekends in Perth, or a getaway fishing, camping trip, or swimming at one of Esperance stunning beaches.

Leave Entitlements

Annual leave is accrued pro rata of 4 weeks per year for the period of employment.  Such leave will attract a loading of 17½%.

If you need to take time off because you’re unwell, or if you need to care for an immediate family member, permanent employees receive 10 personal leave days per year, part-time employees accrue leave pro rata.

All permanent employees of the Shire are entitled to 13 weeks long service leave after completing 10 continuous years’ service in Local Government.  Long service leave accruals are transferable between all local government authorities in Western Australia.

Superannuation

As well as the required 10% superannuation (from 01/07/21) contributions the Shire is required to make on behalf of its employees.

Shire of Coolgardie Allowance

This entitlement is paid to all fulltime, permanent employees and is paid pro rata to permanent part-time employees and is calculated on the following basis:

Corporate Uniform Allowance
All permanent employees are entitled to an annual allowance toward the Local Government uniform.

Personal Protective Equipment & Uniform
All necessary protective clothing and equipment is supplied by the Council to ensure your safety.

Health & Well-being

The health and wellbeing of the employees of the Shire is of great importance. We offer health and ergonomic assessments and for all Permanent employees, discounted (or free) membership to the community gyms and swimming pools.

Other wellness programs include:

For those with children, both Shire Administration Offices and Community Recreation Facilities are within proximity to early childhood education and local schools.

Free parking on site and kitchen facilities are also available for employees use.

The Shire Administration office, Depot, Library and all workplaces including vehicles are smoke-free working environments. We do provide designated smoking areas to be used in lunch breaks only.

The services and facilities offered by the Shire are continually evolving and expanding.

Employee Assistance Program

Free confidential counseling is available to all employees, whether it be a work or personal issue. This may be initially with a Manager, the Chief Executive Officer or assistance can be provided to access professional counseling, including but not limited to stress management, financial management and relationships.

Return to Work Programs

The Shire offer an early intervention program whether employees have been injured or have been off work for a long period of time. The Shire will assist employees, so they can return to pre-injury work duties.

Employee Corporate Functions

The Shire provide an annual Christmas Function for all Council Members, employee and their families to enjoy.
