The Shire of Coolgardie has endorsed a series of changes to its fees and charges across its Waste service areas, reinforcing Council’s ongoing commitment to improving long-term financial sustainability and ensuring equitable service delivery.
At its Special Council Meeting on 8 April 2025, Council resolved to increase select commercial waste disposal charges - These measures are part of a broader strategy to address financial pressures and ensure community services and infrastructure can be maintained and improved for future generations.
The revised fees for waste disposal at the Coolgardie and Kambalda Waste Facilities aim to better reflect the true cost of service provision, particularly in relation to Class III and contaminated commercial waste. The Coolgardie Waste Facility has faced significant operating deficits due to underpriced services and high volumes of commercial waste from outside the Shire.
Council has now adopted updated charges to ensure users, especially commercial operators, pay fair and appropriate rates for waste disposal. These changes are necessary to preserve landfill capacity and fund future rehabilitation
"These changes ensure that users pay their fair share, while protecting residents from increased costs," said Acting CEO Aaron Cook. "It’s a necessary step toward creating a more sustainable and accountable waste management system."
Importantly, residential waste disposal for Shire residents remains free, ensuring local households are not impacted by the changes designed to address external commercial use.
In contrast to the waste fee increases, Council has reduced room rates at the Bluebush Village in Kambalda. Following the successful refinancing of legacy loans associated with the facility, Council is now able to offer more competitive rates to boost occupancy and reduce operating deficits.
"The revised room rates will position Bluebush Village more competitively in the market and support higher utilisation, while still covering the cost of service delivery," Mr Cook explained. "This approach supports our commitment to responsible financial management and enhances economic opportunities in the region."
These pricing changes are part of a broader financial recovery plan focused on improving cash flow, reducing liabilities, and boosting efficiency through operational and asset management reforms.
The new fees and charges will take effect from 8th May.
