Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation is offering a Shire of Coolgardie local a unique and memorable opportunity to sail on a Youth Explorer Voyage.

Through the generosity of Independence Group NL (IGO) – a sponsor of Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation – a young person from Coolgardie or Kambalda will be awarded a $1,750 sponsorship to join a week-long voyage on the STS Leeuwin II. The $1,750 will cover the majority of the $2,350 voyage fare.

On the voyage, participants are divided into ‘watch groups’ and are encouraged to actively participate in all aspects of sailing of the ship, including setting and furling the sails, climbing the rigging and standing watch through the night, all the while building their confidence and invaluable skills for life.

Since 1986, Leeuwin Ocean Adventure has welcomed over 40,000 young men and women on board from all over the State. In October last year, Kambalda West District High School students Haylee Keast and Liam Blondel joined a Youth Explorer Voyage thanks to funding from the Shire of Coolgardie.

Leeuwin’s sail training program is nationally and internationally acknowledged and encourages participants to confront demanding challenges, both physical and emotional. It inspires self-confidence and the acceptance of personal responsibility, promotes an acceptance of others whatever their social or cultural background and it develops a willingness to take controlled risks. No experience is needed before coming on board.

Participation on the voyage may also earn eligible school students 1 WA Certificate of Education (WACE) unit and the voyage will be entered onto their WA Statement of Student Achievement.

Shire of Coolgardie youth aged 14-25 years are encouraged to apply for this once in a lifetime sailing experience. For more information on the sponsorship opportunity, and to apply, email ceo@sailleeuwin.com
