The Shire of Coolgardie is inviting local community members, business owners and industry representatives to their inaugural International Women’s Day event on Sunday 7 March.

The free event will feature six inspiring speakers from completely different walks of life, including:

  • Gloria Moyle – CEO at the Goldfields Women’s Health Care Centre, Gloria has lived in the Goldfields for over 35 years. She is an advocate for healthcare services in region and was awarded the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayoral Award on Australia Day this year.
  • Dr Ann O’Neill – a survivor of a horrific crime who now dedicates her time to improving understanding around the needs of victims of crime. Ann is a specialist in trauma, criminal victimisation and advocacy, and has also been a TEDx speaker.
  • Joy Oliver – Joy lives and works in Coolgardie as a community nurse but has over 40 years’ experience working all over the world including in America, Christmas Island and Mali, West Africa. Joy would often put herself in high-risk situations in order to provide supplies to children in struggling communities and treat people with typhoid and malaria.

Glennis was a pioneering female in the Kambalda mining industry who juggled being a university student whilst caring for teenage children. Jay will comment on her experiences in more recent times and the progress that has been made regarding women in mining.

Shire President, Cr Malcolm Cullen said the event was an opportunity to be inspired by and to learn from the achievements of each speaker.

“Each of our speakers have achieved amazing feats in their careers. This event is an opportunity to sit back, listen and learn from each of them,” said Cr Cullen.

“International Women’s Day is powered by the collective efforts of all. I hope that the speakers will inspire members of our community to consider what they can do both day-to-day and long term to make a positive difference.”

Bevan Jones, General Manager at St Ives Gold Mine says Gold Fields are delighted to be partnering with the Shire of Coolgardie in hosting this event:

“The guest speakers include our own Glennis Bliss and Jay Stafford, who share their personal journeys to success, including and the many hurdles they have negotiated along the way. The event will be an inspiring showcase of what can be achieved with perseverance and dedication”.

The Shire of Coolgardie is committed to celebrating and supporting local women through initiatives such as their partnership with the Goldfields Women’s Health Care Centre.

In October 2020, in partnership with Goldfields St Ives, the Shire arranged for the local not-for-profit organisation to deliver fortnightly women’s health services and counselling to the Kambalda community. The partnership is the first of its kind in the Goldfields and provides a local focus on supporting women’s health and wellbeing.

International Women’s Day is on Monday 8 March with the theme ‘Choose to Challenge’.

The Shire of Coolgardie’s International Women’s Day event has been delivered through a partnership between the Shire of Coolgardie, Gold Fields St Ives and Goldfield’s Women’s Health Care Centre.
