Shire of Coolgardie representatives travelled to the nation’s capital to meet with Members of Parliament and key stakeholders.
Chief Executive Officer, James Trail and Director of Economic and Community Development, Mia Hicks visited Canberra to meet with Federal Ministers and provide an update on infrastructure projects and community priorities for the Shire.
The Shire of Coolgardie has been awarded Federal Government funding for a number of Economic and Community Development projects over the last three years which include Lady Loch Truck Bay, the Coolgardie Post Office Complex, the Kambalda Aquatic Facility and Bayley Street Upgrades. In their meetings with Ministers and key staff, Mr Trail and Ms Hicks shared the recently released positive results of the 2021 Community Perceptions Survey which indicate the community’s priorities and satisfaction with services provided by the Shire.
James Trail (CEO) said the trip was a valuable opportunity to share the Shire’s vision for future projects.
“During the week, we met with Ministers, Assistant Ministers and Advisors from diverse portfolios including Regional Health, Social Services, Waste, Energy, Road Safety, Indigenous Australians and Regional Development,” said Mr Trail.
“I’d like to thank Mr Rick Wilson, Member for O’Connor for his support and assistance in facilitating many of our meetings this week.”
Mr Rick Wilson joined the Shire of Coolgardie during meetings with Ministers to demonstrate his support of the community and their priority projects.
“I have worked closely with the Shire of Coolgardie to lobby for Federal Government funding for their community projects for several years. The Shire is one of the top producers of minerals in the Goldfields-Esperance region and these projects bring significant value to mining stakeholders and the community.”
Waste reduction and environmental management were key topics for discussion, with the 2021 Community Perception Survey indicating that waste collection and the tip site were considered the most important services provided by the Shire of Coolgardie to the community.
CEO James Trail provided an update on the Coolgardie tip expansion, proposed Waste Sorting and Recovery Facility and proposed Waste to Energy Facility which would improve regional recycling outcomes. The Shire of Coolgardie is pleased to announce that the project has significant support and the Shire will continue to work closely with the Federal Government, through the Member for O’Connor, to seek advice on funding sources and opportunities.
Following a meeting with the Office of Regional Health, Regional Communications and Local Government, it was acknowledged that the Shire of Coolgardie’s Integrated Country Health Model is the only model of its kind in Australia.
“This is incredibly exciting for the Shire. Our model aligns well with the Federal Government’s aim to find a sustainable regional health solution and we’re proud to be a pioneer in this space. We look forward to continuing conversations with the Federal Government and the newly appointed National Rural Health Commissioner in the coming weeks,” said Mr Trail.
