On Wednesday 14th July the Kambalda Community Recreation Centre saw a great turn out of garden enthusiasts attend a Sustainable Kitchen Garden Workshop.

It was an opportunity for Gardeners to ask as many questions from growing your own seedlings to making home wines.

Local garden whizz Bill Roberts who facilitated the workshop shared so many great ideas about how he has overcome the Goldfields Red Soil and one of the best items we could have to achieve, green growth is having a Ph prod. Having one of these allows you to buy the ingredients the soil is needing.

It was agreed if you’re looking for an activity to help the environment while you reap the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, to try and get your hands dirty in a vegetable garden and how connecting with nature can lower your stress level and lift your mood.

Home gardens are growing across town with more and more locals in regular contact with each other to compare notes and seeking tips.

There were discussions about keeping pests at bay the natural way. When growing your own herbs, fruit and vegetables puts you in control of the chemicals going into your soil and your food. You don’t have to limit yourself to organic gardening to realise the benefits of a more natural approach.

We also learnt that pesticides can kill beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies, that play an essential role in our food cycle. Protecting the pollinators that drive our food supply was another hot discussion. Little pollinators play a vital role in our food supply as they feast on nectar from flowering plants to reproduce.

Thank you to everyone who came along and supported this beneficial and rewarding event and leaving with garden tips than when they arrived.

Happy gardening everyone.
