Golden Eagle returned to former glory

Widgiemooltha’s Golden Eagle nugget is gold once again thanks to a good samaritan and a true show of community spirit.

Caz Vincent and her husband, originally from Canberra, have been caretaking at the Widgiemooltha Tavern during COVID-19. Caz noticed the much-loved tourist attraction was looking a little worn and weathered, so she approached the Shire of Coolgardie for help.

“The nugget and information board are very popular with passers-by who stop and take photos, climb all over it or stand in front of it many times per week,” said Caz.

“However, the nugget has seen better days in terms of paint. Instead of being a vibrant gold colour it has oxidised to a brown colour could do with a little sprucing up.”

The Shire of Coolgardie was excited by Caz’s idea and enthusiasm and offered financial and in-kind support for the project.

Caz coordinated Shire staff, residents, tavern owners and caretakers to come together and help paint the icon back to its former (gold) glory!

“It’s attractions such as the Golden Eagle which make our Shire unique. The Shire would like to thank Caz for being proactive and coordinating such a fantastic community project,” said Shire President Malcolm Cullen.

Caz and her husband have now left the Shire of Coolgardie to continue their travels across WA.
