The Shire of Coolgardie held it’s biggest Australia Day Celebration to date this year with two jam packed events held both in Coolgardie and Kambalda.

Utilising each town’s family friendly facilities, the Coolgardie event was held at the Coolgardie Park and the Coolgardie Pool. The Kambalda event was held at the Kambalda Aquatic Facility with just under 1000 people coming and going from both events. To add to our existing facilities each town had their own outdoor games set up including a giant inflatable dart board and bouncy castles.

The day began with the classic cooked breakfast at 9.00am with local firies from each town cooking for their communities. With everyone well fed it was time for the official Australia Day Awards. Each town had their own ceremony with many locals being recognized for their endeavours. Below are the winners for each town.

 KAMBALDA

  • Citizen Award – Bianca Johnston
  • Youth Award – Madaline Keast
  • Community Group – St John Kambalda
  • Corporate Citizen Award – Gold Fields St Ives

 COOLGARDIE

  • Citizen Award – Corey Matthews
  • Youth Award – Jarrod Hourigan
  • Community Group – Judumul Advisory Aboriginal Group
  • Corporate Citizen Award - Boothey’s Family Moran Store – IGA Express

With the formalities wrapped up it was time for the families to enjoy the activities put together by the Shire for a range of age groups.

A Safety Around Water Colouring Competition was held with each entry on display for everyone to see. Judging was conducted by Shire Vice President Cr Tracey Rathbone and there were winners over three separate age groups ranging from 0 to 12. Each winner was presented with a prize pack.

We then moved to a new addition to the Shire’s Australia Day Event, the Shoot the hoops competition. This competition covered three age groups ranging from ages 5 to 16. Things got pretty competitive as each group dwindled down to the last few and the real shoot out began with the 5-9 age group giving us the best show. Each group winner was presented with a voucher from Sports Power.

By this stage the temperature was heating up and many were enjoying a dip in the pool.

The family fun wasn’t over with the Gold Nugget Hunt yet to be held. This competition was for three age groups ranging from 4 – 12. Each winner was presented with a prize pack.

With a busy and fun day had by everyone, families chose to stay on at their local aquatic facilities to enjoy the rest of the day.

It wasn’t quite over with family friendly evening movies and free popcorn being held in each town to finish the day off.

Australia Day in the Shire of Coolgardie was a hit with many locals taking to social media to thank the Shire for the event.
