Sparks flew, laughter echoed, and muscles flexed as the Coolgardie Volunteer Fire & Rescue Brigade blazed a trail of wellness at the Coolgardie Gym last week.

Congratulations to our Finance Officer, Leeanne on a massive 10 years of service with the Shire of Coolgardie. We asked Leeanne a few questions about her time with the Shire.

On March 8th, in celebration of International Women's Day, the Shire of Coolgardie, in conjunction with the Goldfields Women's Health Care Centre, hosted a special event in Kambalda that brought together a diverse range of voices and experiences.

Kambalda's sporting scene just got a whole lot more exciting with the rise of SOC COOL1, a touch rugby team made up of local kids aged 13 to 15 .

In a transformative collaboration between passionate community members and the local Shire, the Kambalda Community is proud to announce the establishment of the Kambalda Community Garden, a vibrant hub aimed at fostering community spirit and sustainable living.

What an incredible evening of learning and networking. Our small business sundowner held in Coolgardie was a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow local business owners and tap into the wealth of knowledge shared by the KBCCI and GEDC.

In a heartening display of community collaboration and proactive safety measures, the Royal Life Saving Western Australia (RLSWA), Kambalda WDHS, and the Shire of Coolgardie have joined forces to bolster lifeguard services at the Kambalda Aquatic Facility.

In a recent session held at the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility, our senior citizens gathered for a crucial bushfire awareness presentation.

The Inter-town Holiday Program treated 5-12-year-old children from Kambalda and Coolgardie to an exciting day out in Coolgardie. A bus ride took them to three fantastic destinations – Coolgardie Mini Golf, the local museum, and the Coolgardie pool.

Today, in the Shire of Coolgardie, we gathered with seniors from Coolgardie, Kambalda, and Norseman for a heartwarming Seniors Christmas Luncheon. It was a day filled with joy, laughter, and the spirit of Christmas, made possible by the generous support of our sponsors.

As the sun sets on the school holidays, we’re filled with gratitude for the incredible adventures that unfolded during this special time.

The Shire of Coolgardie is thrilled to announce the opening of a brand new 0-6 age group playground located at Barnes Drive, Kambalda West. This playground is a testament to the Shire's commitment to fostering community growth and engagement through innovative projects and partnerships.

Fresh water was an immediate problem for communities living in the Goldfields in the late 1800s.  Rainfall was unreliable, the underground water was saline and transporting water over vast distances was extremely difficult.

Gold was first found in Coolgardie in September 1892 by explorer / prospector duo William Ford and Arthur Bayley. Staking their claim, Bayley rode back to Southern Cross and reported their find to the resident mining warden John Michael Finnerty with 554 ounces of precious gold in his hands.

On March 19th 1907 a storm hit the Goldfields town of Bonnievale, some 12km north of Coolgardie. This storm bought with it a deluge of rain, which flooded the Bonnievale’s Westralia underground mine where 160 men were working. All but one of these men reached the surface safely, Varischetti’s fellow workers assumed him dead until, once the rain had stopped, they entered the mine to assess the damage caused by flooding and the debris washed in with the water. Upon hearing tapping noises below they were amazed to realise Charlie was still alive, trapped in an air pocket below 50 feet of water. And so begun the rescue of Modesto “Charlie” Varischetti.

The WA Government continues to reach a number of regional communities each year and last week WA Ministers and their staff descended on the Goldfields to participate in both formal and informal consultations and site visits in our region.

The Shire of Coolgardie is thrilled to announce several initiatives aimed at enhancing community well-being and affordability. With a strong focus on providing essential services and promoting inclusivity, these measures will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the lives of residents. 

In a remarkable tale of ancestry and historical discovery, the relatives of Lancel Victor De Hamel (1849-1894) have visited the Coolgardie cemetery to see the installation of a memorial stone on his grave in recognition of his life.

We are thrilled to announce the arrival of two exceptional doctors to the St John General Practice in Kambalda. Dr Tim Taulke-Johnson and Dr Palaniyappah Suresh bring with them a wealth of experience, expertise, and a genuine commitment to providing the best possible care to their Kambalda patients. 

Kasey Turner has quickly progressed from Administration Trainee to Executive Assistant in her short 15 months of working at the Shire of Coolgardie all while completing a Certificate III Business through Central Regional TAFE.

The Coolgardie Community Recreation Centre and gratefully the wider community of the Shire of Coolgardie are now proud owners of a Purple Bench.
