Larkinville Mine
The largest gold nugget ever discovered in W.A. was found here by 16 year old Jim Larcombe on January 15, 1931. Named the Golden Eagle it weighed in at a massive 1,135 ozs!
Charles Hunt Track
Join the 'Charles Hunt' tour from just out of Kambalda and travel along the old woodlines and sandalwooders tracks through grand salmon gum forests to discover one of the most famous majestic granite outcrops of the area, Cave Hill Nature Reserve.
Cave Hill Nature Reserve
Rock climbing is a popular pastime here and climbing spots are provided. The track into the reserve is not maintained on a regular basis, therefore care should be taken.
To assist with planning your trip get yourself a copy of '4WD Days in the Eastern Goldfields of WA', researched and written by four wheel drive enthusiasts, Ian Elliott and Nick Underwood. This handy little publication gives you not only an in depth historical account of the region but detailed trip notes for twelve exciting track tours leaving from Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie, Norseman and Southern Cross, selected GPS waypoints, travel advice and maps.
Widgiemooltha
Widgiemooltha is a very small settlement, but the ‘Widgie’ Tavern, Roadhouse and Motel Caravan Park provides for all your basic needs when travelling.
The ‘Widgie’ Cabins can accommodate groups of up to fourteen who want to enjoy the bush without having to camp. The basics are covered with a communal kitchen, shower and toilets and solar power ensures plenty of hot water. For further information and bookings contact (08) 9091 3868.
King’s Battery
A tower and some Flemish brickwork that housed the water paddle wheel for sluicing gold tailings is all that remains of the old battery which was once employed to process gold bearing ores from local gold mines. The ruins and a rather unique landscape are well worth a day trip or road stop off. Care does need to be taken when crossing the mining haul road to access the area that is situated on Woolibah Station; near the New Hampton mining lease.
Wandering far from King’s Battery is not advisable due to the many old mine workings in the vicinity of the area. Remember to make provision to take your rubbish home with you as there is no collection facilities provided. Poison baits are laid to control wild dogs and shooting is strictly prohibited.
Land Sailing
If you feel the need for speed, Lake Lefroy provides plenty of opportunities to go land sailing. According to the locals, when wind conditions are right land sailors can achieve speeds of 100 kilometres an hour - just centimetres above Lake Lefroy's dry salt pans. Sailing with the Land Sailing Club every Sunday weather permitting. For information contact the Kambalda Visitor Centre.
