Kambalda's New Recreation Centre Officially Opened
The $11.3 million multipurpose centre, which is already being used by sporting groups and community organisations, was officially opened by Ross Graham - Non Executive Director of GBF Underground Mining on Saturday 10th October 2009. Kambalda residents flocked to witness this momentous occasion and cheered loudly as Mr Graham cut the ribbon and declared the facility “officially opened”.
In his presentation to the gathered crowd, Coolgardie Shire President, Mr Norm Karafilis said, “Kambalda has seen good times and bad and has endured through it all. The community of Kambalda deserves a Facility that will strengthen its community bonds, ensuring that long term residents stay, while encouraging visiting workers to make this region their home. We believe that the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility does just that. And gauging by the community’s response to using it, we have certainly travelled down the right path”. Mr Karafilis also gave thanks to the huge number of government agencies, corporate sponsors and community members who supported this project.
There were a variety of activities offered to on the day including bouncy castles, the Wacky Wagon, stalls, and performances by Indigenous Hip Hop Group, DJ Kev and the Keegan Brothers. Members of the Goldfields Giants and Western Force were also on hand to sign autographs and local children were even given an opportunity to have a kick around with the Western Force on the oval.
The opening celebrations were followed by a Gala Dinner in the evening which was attended by the Hon Dr Graham Jacobs MLA, John Mitchell – Coach of the Western Force and Graham Crew – Chairman of the Gold Fields Giants. Graham Crew told the dinner guests that he believed that the Kambalda Community and Recreation Facility was “one of, if not the best facility they had ever played in”.
The Kambalda Community and Recreation Facility is a multipurpose community facility which caters for a wide range of activities. The centre caters for an extensive array of indoor activities that include a fully equipped gymnasium, school holiday program and various team sports. The centre also houses a library, function room equipped with a kitchen and bar, meeting rooms, and community activity room and toy library.
